The Potawatomi Zoo officially cut the ribbon on the new zoo train on March 26, 2026, with help from the zoo’s train sponsor, Indiana Michigan Power Foundation.
“The zoo train runs all year long, and it is one of our guests’ favorite attractions,” says Josh Sisk, executive director of the Potawatomi Zoo. “It’s great to see kids light up when they get to ride the train and hear happy memories from adults who grew up riding the old train. We’re so glad that we can offer our guests a new train experience to share with their families.”
This electric CP Huntington replica train replaces the zoo’s previous gasoline train, which had been running since 2004. In recent years, the old train’s need for repairs caused it to stop running for extended periods.
An electric train also furthers the zoo’s mission of conservation, a goal that connects the zoo to lead sponsor, Indiana Michigan Power Foundation. This train partnership allows the zoo and Indiana Michigan Power Foundation to share their goal of improved environmental stewardship with visitors and residents throughout the region.
“This season marks an exciting new chapter for our Zoo. The arrival of our new electric train is more than just an upgrade—it’s a commitment to creating joyful, memorable experiences for our guests while honoring our responsibility to the environment,” says Mona Livingston, Customer Services Manager at Indiana Michigan Power and a board member of the Potawatomi Zoo. “For more than two decades, the train has been a beloved part of countless family traditions, celebrations, and everyday visits. We’re thrilled to carry that legacy forward with the support of the Indiana Michigan Power Foundation. This partnership helps ensure that future generations can enjoy this favorite attraction while the zoo continues their mission of conservation, education, and exceptional animal care.”
