The scarlet ibis is a medium-size, long-legged wading bird with brilliant scarlet plumage, and black tips on the flight feathers. Their bills are long, slender, and down-curved. They have partially webbed feet. The sexes are similar in appearance but the males are slightly larger. The scarlet ibis is a quiet bird, only making soft grunts and croaks during breeding season. Like the flamingo, the red color comes from its diet of crustaceans.
