Birds at the Potawatomi Zoo
WHITE-NAPED CRANE
Grus vipio

Length: 4 ft.
Weight: 10-14 lbs.
Life Span: 45 years in captivity
Also Known As: Daurian crane in Siberia

Description: Mask of carmine skin on head, red eyes, white nape extending down to silver mantle with throat and belly of slate gray, red legs, straight toes, and upper beak crosses over lower beak a bit. As part of a crane conservation program, the Potawatomi Zoo has sent the eggs from our cranes to Russia where they are hatched and the chicks are then puppet raised and released into the wild. Seven of the 15 species of cranes are listed as threatened or endangered. The white-naped crane is listed as endangered. The destruction of natural habitat on breeding grounds, in wintering areas and along migration routes is having a devastating effect on crane and other migratory bird populations. A 1996 IUCN report estimated that only 4,900-5,300 white-naped cranes remain in China, Japan, and South Korea.

Range/Habitat: The white-naped cranes winter in southeast China, Korea, and southern Japan in wetlands and rice paddies. During breeding season, they can be found in level, marshy and steppe terrain in Siberia, northern China, Mongolia, and south-eastern Russia.

Diet: Wild: sedge tubers, grass seeds
Zoo: crane chow, meat.
